Students around Ohio will silently speak out next week

Cincinnati--Students at 13 area schools will participate in the tenth annual Day of Silence on Wednesday, April 13, a protest in which students voluntarily refrain from speaking for a day to call attention to the silencing of lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender people.

Founded in 1996 at the University of Virginia with 150 students, the event went national the following year. Now, over 450,000 students across the U.S. participate.

Across Ohio, 83 middle and high schools have signed on to participate at www.dayofsilence.org.

Of the colleges and universities in Ohio, those registered on the site include Case Western Reserve University, Cincinnati State Technical and Community College, Cleveland State University, College of Wooster, Denison University, Heidelberg College, John Carroll University, Kent State University, Lakeland Community College, Miami University, the College of Wooster, University of Dayton and the University of Toledo

One of the high schools in the Cleveland area that will be participating is James Ford Rhodes High School.

?The Day of Silence is especially relevant because homophobia doesn?t just affect gay students, it affects everybody,? said organizer Jared Fox.

Case Western Reserve University?s LGBT and allies group, Spectrum, is once again presenting a week of activities surrounding the National Day of Silence.

Break the Silence Week begins on April 11 with a coffeehouse in the Thwing Student Center atrium at 8 pm, and is followed the next day with a public forum, ?Sexuality Without Borders? at 7 pm in the Spartan Room.

A 6 pm vigil in the KSL Oval is the event for the actual Day of Silence, while Spectrum will hold a movie night on Thursday, April 14 at 7 pm in Meeting Room C of the Thwing Student Center. The week closes with Spectrum?s annual Lavender Ball at 9 pm in the Hovorka Atrium. More information about Break the Silence Week is available at http://home.case.edu/spectrum.
